"Shadows"
©1998 by Spring

What is it about shadows in the winter?
They always slant alittle lower
as if hiding from the world.
Perhaps they too have secrets
that they don't want us to know.
What is it about their stillness
that only the wind can shift?
Maybe they didn't move
and it was just the stirrings of our souls
adjusting to the changes of the moon.
Long nights inching ever longer
     in harmony with the tides.
Third quarter moon, dark clouds, long nights.
